Thanks to our performers, directors, and sponsors for a successful Thespians Go Hollywood 2016!
Barrett Foa thought his grandmother had given him tickets to a Broadway performance of Les Misérables
. Instead, he found himself at a spectacularly miscast community theatre production, where Jean Valjean sounded more like Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof
and the usually dewy-eyed Cosette resembled an operatic matron. Barrett, a regular on the CBS drama NCIS: Los Angeles
, embodied these and five other eclectic characters in a comic, one-man rendition of the iconic song “One Day More” that was the capstone of Thespians Go Hollywood.
Before an audience of current Thespians and Thespian alumni at the El Portal Theatre in Los Angeles’ North Hollywood neighborhood, Barrett was joined by the evening’s cohosts, Hunter Bell and Susan Blackwell, stars of Broadway’s [title of show]
, and an all-star cast who shared their unique performances and their thoughts on the value of theatre education.
“It was truly a collaborative effort by our California Thespian student performers, a rock star group of technicians, seventeen talented professionals who donated their time, and the glue that held it all together—our MCs Hunter Bell and Susan Blackwell,” says Krista Carson Elhai, the California Educational Theatre Association president and the event’s organizer. “We are all looking forward to Thespians Go Hollywood 2017.”
The International Thespian Society’s inaugural west coast alumni event not only attracted more than one hundred attendees, but also raised $8,000 to benefit theatre education in underserved schools. “My favorite part of the entire evening was watching our adult performers watch the student Thespian performers sing their closing number, 'Our Time/Bring on Tomorrow,'" Elhai says. “They had tears in their eyes, and I knew at that moment they were remembering their journey from the high school stage to where they are today.”
